The Ephesian Trivia Compilation 1

As we do the ALL IN sermon series all across Victory Metro Manila, I have collected a few information tidbits about the book of Ephesians and the church of Ephesus. These are all posted at Victory Caloocan fan page. If you know of any other Ephesian trivia, feel free to post in the comments below. Enjoy!

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #1: Did you know that…
Ephesians is the only Pauline epistle that did not address any particular church issue or problem? Scholars say it is the most joyful epistle; and yet, it was written while Paul was behind prison bars in Rome.

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #2: Did you know that…
The three keywords of the book of Ephesians are WEALTH, WALK and WARFARE? Wealth is about the spiritual blessings that God prepared in advance for us even before the creation of world (Eph1); walk is about us walking worthy of the calling that we have in Christ (Eph4); and warfare is about taking our stand against the forces of evil (Eph6).

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #3: Did you know that…
The Ephesian church was one of the seven churches especially mentioned in the book of Revelation? Jesus’ charge against the Christians in Ephesus was that they lost their first love. Years after the jubilant tone of Paul’s letter, the love of the believers in that city turned COLD (Rev2.4-6). How do you guard yourself against this kind of discouragement?

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #4: Did you know that…
Ephesus is the center of worship for the Greek goddess Artemis (Roman: Diana)? The Ephesians believed that the image of Artemis fell from the sky. In Eph. 2.19-22, Paul countered this false belief by saying that we are the temple (the dwelling place) of God, built on the foundations of the apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ Himself our cornerstone.

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #5: Did you know that…
The most comical exorcism in the Bible happened in Ephesus? Seven sons of a Jewish priest tried to cast out demons by invoking the name of Jesus “whom Paul preached.” The demon detected they were not really men of God so he jumped on them and beat them that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding! Acts 19.13-16

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #6: Did you know that…
Paul lectured in the school of Tyrannus in Ephesus for a period of two years? Two lessons we learn from this. One, education historically belongs to the Christian religion; and two, Darth Tyrannus of Star Wars got his name from the New Testament. But George Lucas will probably disagree (*wink*). [Acts 19.9-10]

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #7: Did you know that…
The first Christians in Ephesus didn’t know or was not aware that there is such a person as the Holy Spirit? [Acts 19.1-7]

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #8: Did you know that…
Ephesians 1.3-14 is just ONE sentence in the original Greek version of the New Testament? Scholars say that it is the longest sentence in the entire Bible. In the NIV1984, it is broken down into eight sentences.

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #9: Did you know that…
During the early beginnings of the Ephesian church, the preaching of the gospel caused a riot in the city square? Acts 19.32 reports: “Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.” Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

EPHESIAN TRIVIA #10: Did you know that…
Ephesians 1.4-5 are two of the most controversial verses among evangelicals? It is a cornerstone text of those who believe the doctrine of predestination (once saved, always saved). The other side of the issue is that a person can lose his salvation depending on his everyday choices and endurance of faith. But don’t get too caught up in this argument. We’d rather honor God and make disciples than be couch theologians.
